The Department of Public Works targets to benefit the filling of positions in all fields seen as scarce, they offer young, talented candidates the prospect of working within these fields. With these Department of Public Works Learnerships, the department can now also sustain an experienced labor force. They also promote the economic growth of the country with these learnerships. These learnerships offer all South Africans an equal chance to learn how the work place functions. Their choices are not based on factors such as religion, race or gender. They are looking for young individuals who show astonishing abilities academically, with an enthusiasm to learn and make the most of their lives. These fields of study are made available by the Department yearly, some may depend on the need within the Department, and there may also be other fields available. Candidates interested in any of the following scarce fields of study may apply:

Department of Public Works Learnerships Requirements

Applications must include certified copies of all documentation, and must ensure they completed the application fully, as well as sign it. It is suggested that candidates also include a Curriculum Vitae and cover letter with their application. Requirements will differ, depending on the career path, yet there are some basic requirements. Candidates will require the following for most Learnerships:

  • Candidates must hold a valid Matric Certificate
  • Candidates must be a South African citizen with a valid ID Document
  • Candidates must be computer literate
  • Candidates must be proficient in English (speak, read & write)
  • Candidates must hold a degree or diploma in the field applying for
  • Candidates must be unemployed
  • Candidates must be between 18 and 25 years old
  • Must not have been part of another learnership

Candidates with the following attributes are preferred:

  • Able to meet deadlines
  • Works well under pressure
  • Can work independently
  • Works well as part of a team
  • Great planning skills
  • Great organizing skills
  • Analytically orientated
  • Great negotiation skills
  • Accurate
  • Detail orientated

Candidates from specific communities or previously disadvantaged backgrounds will receive preference.

Department of Public Works Learnerships Application

Department of Public Works online learnerships applications is not available. Candidates may find applications at their local department office, and also return the completed form with required documentation to the same office. The department may also advertise these learnerships through means of advertisements in newspapers, career exhibitions, radio broadcasting or even by visiting educational institutes. Candidates are asked to please ensure that all documents are copied and certified. Please do not send your original documents with the application. The following documents must accompany your application:

  • Affidavit
  • Motivation Letter
  • ID Document of Student
  • ID Document of parents / guardian
  • Proof of financial need
  • Admission letter from Institute of Higher Learning
  • Academic Records
  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • Progress Reports (where applicable)

Candidates must please ensure that the application form is completed in legible writing. All fields must be completed, and the application signed by the applicant. Because of the high amount of applications they receive yearly, only those who have qualified will be contacted. The Department asks that candidates please not contact them. Only short listed candidates will be interviewed. No late applications will be considered, or applications missing a signature, documentation or are not completed fully.  Candidates who have not had any communication after 60 days from closing date, can assume their application was unsuccessful. These learnerships may be for a duration of 12 months to 2 years. For more information candidates can visit their website and many of the provinces have their own learnership opportunities as well.

Department of Public Works Learnerships Closing Date

Applications usually close during August each year, thus, interested candidates must ensure their applications are in before the closing date. The idea with these learnerships is to aid in the stabilising of the economy and promote growth within South Africa. These learnerships assist in alleviating the shortage of scarce skills and promote skills development across all fields.
